Celebrating Christmas in Dubai

UAE is a Muslim country but then Dubai and the rest of its Emirates are open cities. Almost 60% of its workforce depends on expatriates coming from different countries that have different culture and religion living peacefully and harmoniously in the land of oil and sand. Muslims celebrate Eid, Hindu celebrates Diwali and Christians or Catholic celebrate Christmas freely in their own way and its being respected completely.

To celebrate Christmas in UAE is totally different in celebrating Christmas in the Philippines in the sense that only those Catholic or Christian populations celebrates it and not as whole country.

Dubai is a friendly place to celebrate Christmas and the government of UAE has nothing against it. For the last seven years that I have celebrated it here, it is nothing different in the Philippines.

When we came to Dubai, we carry our culture with us. After
Eid Al Adha celebration of our Muslim brothers, it became a family tradition to decorate our house or our room with Christmas ornaments that we have been keeping from the last nine months. Like in the Philippines, we also observe the longest Christmas preparation and celebration here in Dubai. As the time draws near, we also plan of how we will celebrate it, what food should be on our dinner table on Christmas Eve, of course it will never be complete without all traditional Filipino dishes, what gift to be wrapped in fancy papers for our dear friends and loved ones, buy new clothes to wear on that very special occasion dedicated specially in commemorating the birth of our Savior, and also plan for parties with friends and officemates where some are also having their "monito monita" for fun. Write letters to Santa and complete our wish list.

There are also several Catholic Churches in UAE like Saint Mary's Church and Saint Francis of Asisi in Dubai and Saint Michaels Church in Sharjah where one can attend and complete "Simbang Gabi". Inside the church premises, traditional "puto bumbong" and "bibingka" are also being sold by the Filipino community so one can also enjoy this native sweets after the mass.

On Christmas day, we also visit relatives if there is any and friends for those who are bachelors, this year since Christmas falls on a Friday so it is the best time to visit them since we are off from work.

You see there is not much difference in celebrating Christmas in UAE in my own perspective. Even in a foreign land like this, I can still celebrate it the most traditional Filipino way I know and I am doing it to inculcate it in my daughters mind that we Filipinos have our own way of celebrating Christmas and I want her to know deep in her heart what is the meaning and purpose of all this celebration. We must not forget one thing, that Christmas beyond all the lights and celebration is the time of giving and showing our love for one another. It is the time of forgiving afterall, it is the main reason why Jesus was born.

Home Decor for Christmas

Now, I want you to take a peek in our humble room that me and my family dutifully decorate with Christmas ornaments and a very special tree. This is our Christmas tree. Its the second year we have this. The very first fir tree we had was sent to my mom in the Philippines so she can use it at home. We bought it from Dragon Mart for AED 150. The red and gold ornaments are from Ace Hardware and some are curtesy of Marks and Spencer when my sister is working there here in Dubai.
These are snowflakes made of cutout paper. I made it myself with the help of Lanna then we stick it at the glass door on the way out of our terrace. I just wanted to have a feel of snow at home.

This is the holy leaf that I also made myself. Who says it has to be expensive, one just have to play with the immagination and voila, I have this wonderful ornament for my altar. Isn't it wonderful?

Christmas Wishlist # 4

It is only four days before Christmas and I am beyond my target of writing ten wishes in my wish list. What the heck?!!! What is there to ask for? I am already blessed with so many things that I could not ask for more and I am already so thankful to God for everything.

There is just one thing...I feel homesick and the only thing in my mind now is to celebrate Christmas in the Philippines with my mom and my family. I am yearning to do that although it will not happen now but sure do plan for it in the coming year. Still a long way to go but I am sure it will be worth it. Definitely, it will be splendid to spend Christmas in the Philippines after seven long years of celebrating it in Dubai.

That is right, you read that right. We have celebrated Christmas and New Year in Dubai for the last seven years that is why this wish is so important to me. Some of you might be thinking or asking how I can stay without going home for Christmas. It is simply because the family of my husband was here all the time and my mom was here for like three times and we are able to celebrate it together. What I am really missing is the feeling of being home in the Philippines, being in my home and being home with my family.

We do celebrate Christmas in Dubai too. How we do that is a different story.

Christmas Wish List #3-A Baby Boy

Ultrasound says I am having a baby boy this time. Not so sure yet until I see it with my own eyes. Why in doubt, you may ask?

My sister was informed during her ultrasound that she is having a girl so what they did was to shop clothes, feeding bottles, and more baby necessities with girly shades of pink, yellow and the like. The funny thing was my brother-in-law whose waiting for her wife to deliver was informed by a fellow (who is also waiting outside of the delivery room for his wife to deliver) that my sister gave birth to a baby boy instead of a baby girl as they have expected. So the ultrasound was wrong but what I don’t know is how many ultrasound test they had before confirming that they are really going to have a girl.

In our experience, we had around three ultrasound tests on different stages of my pregnancy to be sure what we will have a girl. This time for the first instance we are already informed that we are having a boy and the second time as well. I am not fully convinced though. Still I prefer to wait until I deliver. To see is to believe. BUT...I definitely accepts whatever gender GOD choses to give the growing baby inside me. Sure this baby is a perfect GIFT.

Do you really want to know whether you will have a boy or a girl? Here is how you will know.

Click the link below which will direct you to a site about this Chinese Birth Calendar. You can use it for fun to know your baby's gender as it is said to be accurate but ofcourse there is a more reliable source such as ultrasound that I mentioned before...but check more than once to be sure.

Spirit of Sport - 2009 Inner Flame Igniting Motivation

Yesterday is one of the many special days in my little girls life at school. She is in grade one at The Apple International School in Dubai. It was their annual sports day which was held at the Dubai Police Stadium in Garhoud.
The many benifits of sports to children includes a fun and enjoyable experience that motivates them more to participate, next to it is that it provides the arena for youth to be physically active. Letting our kids participate in sports related activity keeps them away from sedentary pursuits such as televsion watching and this can translate to a healthier lifestyle both now and in the future.
Being physically active provides important health benifits such as good body composition(less body fat) stronger bones, greater mascular strength and better endurance.

Participation gives youth the opportunity to learn a variety of motor and sports related skills such as running, jumping, kicking, throwing and many more.

When a child is both psychologically and physically ready to participate, it can give a child an opportunity to develope self-competence in their skills, self esteem and moral competence. It also helps them to learn social skills and make friends. They also learn to work with a team.

With so many benifits that sports can bring to Lanna's life, we are so supportive of her school activities. Now, I would love to share with you some snaps of the event.

Christmas Wishlist #1 and #2

Christmas is just around the corner and it is the best time of the year for me. There is no other holiday that excites me the way I get excited about Christmas and of course New Year. Me and my husband almost finished shopping for Christmas presents for our friends and loved ones and are now waiting to be wrapped in fancy shiny colorful papers with beautiful ribbons of red and green.
Today is exactly ten days before Christmas and I wonder if I will received any gifts from anyone. It doesn't matter at all whether I will get one or not, what I like to do is to distribute gifts to friends and loved ones that I carefully pick and wrap for them when the clock strikes twelve on Christmas eve along with my hugs and kisses. I hope they will like what we've got for them.
I wanted to write a wish list this time...not to give you the idea of what you can give me :) but what I really wanted to get for myself when I have enough cash to stash.
Wish list # 1 - A Red Wallet
My sister once told me that a red wallet energize your finances. These are the most auspicious and excellent for generating more money according to Feng Shui. Why not, red also drives away evil and plus I have been hanging around for long with the black Francois Marithe Girbaud wallet I have. It is time to get a new one.
Wish list # 2 - A New Mobile Phone

This is the phone that I am using now. I bought it last September 2006 so that means that we have been together thru thick and thin for the last 3 years. Mind you it is really the best phone I had in years. It is in its best condition only needing to change the cover but it functions so well that I really scared to let it go. My N70, my companion, my on the go camera, my mirror for its front camera, my iPod, it's everything to me. I might keep it or give it to my mom when I decided to ditch it with the iPhone above. Hopefully I will get it soon. Wish me luck. Need to start shelling out some money in my piggy bank.
I actually do not remember how many phones I had, well I do, I change phones only four times, yes only four times... I am not a phone enthusiast who changes phone whenever something new came out in the market but I carefully choose which phone I wanted to buy then when I have it I will tell myself how long I wanted to keep it and use it as long as it is working and serving me its purpose, getting connected with people and a tool for my daily use.
I intend to list at least 10 things in this wish list and I will be thinking harder for tomorrow. I wanted to add here the things that I really wanted and what my heart desires. So please keep coming back and see what's up for tomorrows post.
The thing is we don't get things immediately when we say we wanted it. But keeping in mind what we really want keeps us on track and we set goals to get it.
